Many of us know the thrilling Bible account of David and Goliath. It is recorded in 1 Samuel, chapter 17. Here's what happened:

The giant Goliath had been mocking the Israeli army -- and God. Goliath would step out from the Philistine army line into the open where he could be clearly seen by all. He was almost ten feet tall. He wore a bronze helmet and was dressed in 126 pounds of armor! He had on bronze shin guards and carried a bronze sword. His spear was like the rail of a fence. The tip alone weighed over 15 pounds!

Goliath stood there and shouted to the Israelite troops to pick their best warrior to fight him. When King Saul and his troops heard Goliath's challenge, they were terrified! Twice each day for forty days, Goliath challenged them to a one-on-one fight.

Then David, our super hero, showed up. He had brought food for his brothers who were serving in the Israeli army. When he heard Goliath's shouts, his zeal for God kicked in. Even though his brothers accused him of things that were not true, he went to King Saul for permission to fight Goliath. David was only in his mid to late teens. But his faith in God was stronger than anyone's in the entire Israeli army!

After unsuccessfully trying to get David to wear his own personal armor, King Saul gave David permission to fight Goliath.

David ran to the brook and collected five smooth stones. He put them in his shepherd's pouch, took his sling in hand, and approached Goliath.

Goliath threatened to feed David to the buzzards -- and he cursed David by his gods. But David quickly replied, "You come at me with sword and spear, but I come at you in the name of the God of the Angel Armies, the God of Israel's troops whom you curse and mock. This very day God is handing you over to me. I'm about to kill you, cut off your head, and serve up your body and the bodies of your Philistine buddies to the crows and coyotes. The whole earth will know that there's an extraordinary God in Israel. And everyone here will learn that God doesn't save by means of sword and spear. The battle belongs to God. He's handing you to us on a platter!

That made Goliath angry (I can't imagine why). He started toward David. David ran toward Goliath. He took a stone from  his pouch, slung it, and hit Goliath in the forehead sinking deep, deep, deep. The Philistine crashed to the ground face down.

Then David ran up to Goliath, stood over him, pulled the giant's sword from its sheath, and cut off his head.

David relied completely on God. We know this because of what he says in verse 46: "This day the Lord will hand you over to me . . . " David trusted God to defeat Goliath -- and God did. David was a willing warrior. He is an excellent Bible super hero role model!
